FAQs
Is Fuqua/Durham a family-friendly place?
Short answer: Yes for both! Given the inclusive culture of Team Fuqua, families are welcomed and incorporated into nearly all aspects of the experience. The school has several organized events and clubs that focus on partners and families, such as Fuqua Partners and Fuqua Families. Fuqua Partners hosts regular events for partners with and without children. Families are always welcome to attend Fuqua Fridays — a celebration at the end of each week of classes — and even have a special room with kid food and toys. Durham offers a low cost of living and is a great place to live.
What types of activities/events does LDSSA organize?
Recent activities include the following:
Opening social – A taste of local eats and an excellent start to relationship-building; we include Daytime MBAs as well as all other Fuqua programs (Ph.D., MQM, MMS, etc.).
Campout – Another excellent bonding experience for the club, which revolves around getting as many season tickets to basketball as possible as well as community service, games, and football-watching.
End of term celebration – Fall 1 is hectic . . . for students and families; we celebrate the end of the term as a profound accomplishment and use this as a time to reflect on the upcoming break and Fall 2 Term
Halloween Party – A party with Durham’s favorite pizza, costumes, games for the kids, and of course – candy.
Christmas Party – A get together to celebrate Christmas with your Fuqua LDSSA family. In addition to games and activities, we do a small service activity.
Easter Egg Hunt – Kids search through the Duke forest looking for individually marked Easter eggs.
Golf Tournament – To wrap up the year we do a golf tournament which allows us to bond while we brush up on a very important MBA skill.
Ad Hoc Nights Out for Partners – Throughout the year partners will get together for a night out, or students will get together to watch a sporting event.
Are there Latter-day Saints at Fuqua/Duke?
We have a history of strong LDS representation at Fuqua. Club members have been very active in leadership roles while at Fuqua and have a great reputation among classmates and administration. In addition to Fuqua, there are many members of the Church in the Medical School, Law School, and other graduate programs at Duke, providing many opportunities to develop friendships in the local wards.
What activities/opportunities are available for families in the Triangle?
Durham has a great community feel while still having the amenities of a larger city. These include the arts, museums, sports (Duke basketball!), and many nearby outdoors-related activities. It also has easy access to nearby cities of Raleigh and Chapel Hill and is only 2-3 hours from the beach to the east and the mountains to the west.
