FAQs

Are there Latter-day Saints at Fuqua/Duke?
Yes! Fuqua has a strong history of Latter-day Saint (LDS) representation. LDS students have consistently been active in leadership roles across Fuqua and are well-regarded by classmates and the administration. Beyond Fuqua, there are also many members of the Church in other graduate programs at Duke, including the Medical School, Law School, and more.

Most LDS Fuqua students attend the Chapel Hill 2nd Ward — a married student ward for graduate students from both Duke and UNC. It’s a vibrant and supportive community of students and spouses in similar life stages, and for many, it becomes one of the most meaningful parts of their time in North Carolina.

What types of activities/events does LDSSA organize?
LDSSA (Latter-day Saint Student Association) at Fuqua is a tight-knit, welcoming group that regularly brings members and their families together. Some recent activities include:

  • Opening Social – A kickoff event hosted at a co-president’s or Fuqua LDS faculty member’s home, providing a warm introduction to the community.

  • Beach Retreat – A Fall 1 weekend getaway for students and families to relax and deepen connections outside of school and recruiting.

  • General Conference Brunches – Potluck brunches held before sessions of General Conference, attended by students, spouses, and kids.

  • BYU MBA’s “Faith and Belief at Work” Case Competition – An opportunity to travel to Utah and compete alongside students from other top MBA programs.

  • LDS MBA Society Conferences – A chance to visit other MBA campuses and network with fellow Latter-day Saints across the country.

  • Biweekly Game Nights – Casual, family-friendly gatherings that bring everyone together for fun and connection.

Is Fuqua and/or Durham a family-friendly place?
Absolutely. Team Fuqua is known for its inclusive culture, and that extends to students’ families. Spouses and children are welcomed into the community through events hosted by groups like Fuqua Partners and Fuqua Families. Fuqua Partners organizes regular social events tailored for partners, with and without kids, and families are always invited to weekly Fuqua Fridays—which even has a dedicated room with toys and kid-friendly snacks.

Durham itself is a fantastic place to raise a family. It offers a lower cost of living than many major cities, great neighborhoods, and a relaxed pace of life, all while providing access to world-class education and healthcare.

What activities/opportunities are available for families in the Triangle?
The Triangle area (Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh) combines the charm of a smaller city with the amenities of a larger metro area. Families enjoy a wide range of activities, including:

  • Numerous museums and cultural institutions

  • Outdoor attractions like parks, trails, and lakes

  • Local sports—especially Duke basketball!

  • Family-friendly festivals and seasonal events

  • Day trips to the beach (2–3 hours east) or the mountains (2–3 hours west)

In short, it’s a welcoming, well-rounded area where families can thrive both during and beyond business school.
