Name: William Reed
Credentials: DC, PhD
Workplace: University of Alabama at Birmingham
Bill Reed is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Director of the Rehabilitation Science Doctoral Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His clinical training was as a Doctor of Chiropractic in which he was in private practice for over 14 years. He earned his PhD in Anatomical Sciences & Neurobiology at the University of Louisville to begin the pursuit of an academic research career investigating physiological mechanisms underlying clinical responses to manual therapy. He was a recipient of an NIH/NCCIH Career Development Award to characterize muscle spindle afferent response to simulated spinal manipulation with/without spinal joint fixation which was followed by an NIH R21 award. Dr. Reed’s research interest continues to be focused on investigating peripheral and central mechanisms of manual therapy and other non-pharmacological therapeutic approaches in various pre-clinical pain models. A recent scoping review by Dr. Reed highlights the great need for more mechanistic-oriented manual therapy research. Dr. Reed has over 50 peer-reviewed publications with his most recent work characterizing an animal model of muscular low back pain using nerve growth factor.
Dr. Reed is looking forward to working with Drs. Cook, Elliott, Kawchuk and Napadow in building this exciting ForceNET network of researchers and clinicians to generate new mechanistic-related knowledge on manual therapy interventions that have been therapeutically beneficial to various populations for thousands of years.
