Title: What the Silence Says

What you Hear: Most of the noises are relatively quiet, and the emptiness seems to dominate the soundscape. There is a quiet conversation in the background that fades in and out. The only other distinguishable sound is that of clanging metal, although the source of the sound is unidentifiable.

What you see: The picture captures just how empty the BC Plaza was at the time of the recording. It also shows the cloudy, grey weather, which may be in part why there were so few students or birds out making noise.

What is captured: The emptiness of Duke in the time of the lockdown. It highlights just how dramatically the social scene is transformed by administration imposed restrictions and the threat of the quick spread of COVID. What is absent: Many of the sounds that are attributed to BC — like music, lively conversations, the footsteps of students running to class, or the scraping of chairs and tables — are absent. In this way, it can be said that students’ socializing or the spirit of Duke student’s social lives are missing.
