A Collaborative Ethnography

ABOUT

Hello! We are Gigi, Peace and Lummie and we are athletes at Duke University. We are undergraduate students juggling life as student-athletes during the global COVID-19 pandemic. While many colleges and universities across the nation have halted athletic play due to COVID, athletes at Duke have had the privilege to continue playing. Duke has provided resources and opportunities for athletes to continue playing throughout this difficult time. It is the athletes themselves who must take initiative to carry out the protocols put in place in order to have a successful season. This willingness to sacrifice so much is a testament to athletes’ dedication to their sports.

The privilege to be a Duke athlete during the time of COVID has prompted questions about the fortunate environment athletes live in. Nonetheless, as fortunate as we have been here at Duke, challenges have continued to present themselves. Some of these challenges will be highlighted in our designated fieldwork subcategories.

Come take a look inside Duke Athletics!

Hello! My name is Gigi and I am a senior from Rochester, NY on the Women’s Lacrosse team at Duke University. I am majoring in psychology and minoring in evolutionary anthropology.

Hi my name is Lummie. I am a senior football player at Duke, studying Cultural Anthropology.

For my section of the Ethnography it is titled Team Living at the Wa, where I will analyze privileges afforded to athletes at the WA ,limits that are placed on athletes living in the WA, and how living at the Wa Duke has limited  comradery among the football team

For my subpage, Inside Women’s Lacrosse, I explore the changing attitudes of playing lacrosse and added anxieties the Duke Women’s Lacrosse team faced during this challenging year.

For my section, Operations of Duke Football, I will be looking at how the program has managed their operations during the time of Covid. Looking at how they conduct meetings, testing for players and staff, and their covid protocols. I will be comparing that with how they operated before the pandemic started.
