Duke Undergraduate Math Seminar (DUMS) aims to give undergraduates the opportunity to broaden their math knowledge and practice explaining mathematical material. The standard weekly/biweekly seminar meeting is an hour-long talk delivered by an undergraduate. Most talks are expository, although some students will present their research. Everyone has the opportunity to give a talk and everyone is welcome to attend. Attendees are generally not expected to have an advanced math background and everyone should be able to get something out of every talk. We stress the importance of understanding over everything else. We’d rather have a speaker get through half of their content while maintaining 80% audience comprehension than get through all of their content with most people lost and confused. And we ask a lot of questions. As part of DUMU (Duke University Math Union), we strive to foster a collaborative culture and create a community for peer learning. We upload recordings of talks to this website. We also upload notes and further reading for every talk.
