Description

Metal flute, with pads, and possibly with silver
Inscription on barrel joint: “Carte and Boehm’s Systems / Combined.”

Indicates the hybrid nature of Carte’s flute, combining two complicated fingering systems: Carte’s 1851 design (see Carte’s “Old System” Flute) and Boehm’s 1847 design (see 1847 Boehm system flute).

Considered one of the most complicated flutes to be commercially produced on a large scale. For further information, see section titled “A London Response to Boehm’s Work: Rudall, Rose & Carte” in Jeremy Sexton’s blog post, Boehm’s Ghost: A Vicarious Portrait of a Flute Maker in London.
