Peg Helminski, M.Ed.

An award-winning public speaker, Peg Helminski has been training and educating adults for over 40 years. She has a Bachelor’s degree with a dual major in English and Behavioral Science and a Master’s Degree in Counseling with a focus on group dynamics. She added a certificate in Coaching to her credentials in 2016 and is a member of the International Coach Federation, Toastmasters International, and the Association for Talent Development.

As Counseling Director, she trained the counseling and job site supervisory staff of the Winchester Area CETA job-training-program and developed a series of workshops at the Virginia Employment Commission in career skills development and job-seeing skills. She ran job-seekers groups for chronically unemployed or under-employed adults, for those whose career fields had been eliminated by automation and those making a midlife career change.

Later, as a counselor working both in private practice and for community counseling agencies, she led parent training groups using the STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) Model, facilitated counseling groups for court-ordered abusive parents and first time youth offenders, and coordinated a state-wide cohort of church youth leaders in ongoing leadership development training. She has also been a women’s retreat leader and a lay preacher. Recipient of the first inter-denominational Walk the Talk Award for a sermon combatting domestic violence, Peg subsequently provided education about domestic violence to church groups.

A published author and former MN State Director of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Peg has coordinated conferences and provided workshops on writing, editing and marketing both books and magazine manuscripts via instructor-led and online presentations.

Her real passion is leadership development and team building, focused on bringing out the unique leaderships skills of each team member to impact the effectiveness of the team as a whole.

Recent clients have included, the Duke Radiology Administrative Team, James Madison University Alumni Association, AT&T Corporate Center, Raleigh, the National Association of Health Services Executives, and the Toastmasters International Leadership Development Institute.

Recent staff development workshops have focused on effective communication, professional development planning, time management, career redirection, and presentation skills development.

In her spare time, Peg mentors a Toastmasters Club at the Durham Rescue Mission, empowering homeless men to develop leadership skills and effectively tell their stories; advocating for themselves with impact. Several of these club members have risen to leadership positions within the Rescue Mission and greater Toastmasters organization, become a spokesperson for the Durham Rescue Mission and/or competed in speech contests on the NC state level of Toastmasters International. For this work she was nominated for the 2017 Duke Healthcare Martin Luther King Community Caregiver Award.
