Kelly Cottrell is the Associate Director of the Academic Advising Center at Duke University. The Academic Advising Center coordinates college advising for first- and second-year Duke students in Trinity College until they declare their academic major and join a undergraduate department. In her role, Kelly oversees the training, development and support of nearly 300 faculty and staff across the university who serve as college advisors. Kelly develops and facilitates training sessions to help advisors stay current with critical advising tasks and to ensure they have the support they need to help students be intentional about their academic, personal and professional goals. Kelly also advises students and has served as a college advisor at Duke for fifteen years and is a proud recipient of the 2014 Excellence in Advising Award. Prior to joining the AAC, Kelly worked with Duke Human Resources assisting employees with professional development, skills training and career transitions. She coordinated career development services and provided academic advisement to students at Virginia Tech. Kelly has delivered academic support services to Duke’s psychology graduate students and worked in the Graduate Admissions Office. Originally from Illinois, she has lived in Durham for a very, very long time. She holds a BS in Communications and an MA in Counseling/Student Personnel.
