Joy Birmingham

Assistant Director of Professional Development
Learning & Organization Development

I have been part of the L&OD team at Duke for the past 3 years, serving both the University and the Medical System.  I brought my experience in instructional design, curriculum development and best practices in adult education.  I was able to contribute to the team’s work by organizing the L&OD Catalog, updating coursework and creating new courses.  A year ago, I received a promotion, moving from a Senior Practitioner to Assistant Director of Professional Development, handling everything that relates to open registration classes.

I have worked over 25 years in the Management Training and Professional Development arena.  I received my Master’s Degree in Adult Education from NCSU prior to joining the Learning & Development staff at SAS, where I worked for the next 13 years.  I began as a Management Trainer for the first five years at SAS and then designed and piloted a Leadership Coaching Initiative by myself for one year.  The pilot was so successful that I was promoted to the Manager of the Performance Development Consulting Department, where I trained my previous T&D colleagues to coach leaders throughout the organization.  I was able to manage seven direct reports for the next seven years offering manager and employee training, workshops for organization development, leadership coaching, and meeting facilitation services.  Before coming to Duke, I served as a Professional Development Specialist for three years in UNC’s Training and Talent Development Department, and I am a certified Professional Coach by the Coaches Training Institute (CTI).

Expertise: Adult Education, Coaching, Instructional Design, Curriculum Development
