4th Grade Saturday Conference

Duke University medical students invite Durham 4th graders to participate in a Saturday educational program at the Duke University School of Medicine Trent Semans Center for Health Education. Thanks to grants from the Schweitzer Fellowship program, Doing Good in the Neighborhood and Duke University, we are able to cover the costs for our guests!

In an attempt to allow more students to attend, this year we have changed from a two day conference and will be having a one day conference that begins at 1:00 pm on Saturday and ends day at 4:00 pm. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the Duke University Medical School located at Searle Center Dr. Durham, NC 27710. We ask that parents drop off their children in the pull around for the Duke Cancer Center located at 20 Duke Medicine Cir, Durham, NC 27710. We will meet them there and escort them into the medical school.

The program in the fall will focus on the cardiovascular system. We work closely with our local elementary schools to make sure that our curriculum is age appropriate and correlates well with the elementary school learning objectives.

At 3:30 pm the students present their projects from the conference to the parents and their friends. We invite all the parents to attend and support the work of their children. Parents may park for free on weekends in Parking Garage 1 off of Trent Dr and by the same Cancer Center drop off to get to the medical school. We will have signs posted to the classroom.

Our goals are to nurture interest in the health sciences, teach healthy lifestyle habits, inspire students to pursue higher levels of education, and to have fun!
