Instructions to Treat Skin Irritation around a G-tube, GJ-tube, or J-tube that is due to leakage
- Cleanse the skin with water / gauze (no soap).
- Pat dry
- lightly dust a thin layer of Stomahesive powder to raw skin (wherever it is red and irritated).
- Spray 3M No-Sting Skin Barrier to the powder, so that it is soaked.
- Fan dry the area. Can apply a second layer if desired (repeat steps 3,4)
- Place only one drain gauze between the skin and silicone disc
- Repeat every other day.
When the skin has healed and is no longer irritated, STOP using the powder and skin barrier.
Extra notes:
- Always avoid having the tube ‘hang’ down, where it can ‘wag’ around. This will encourage enlargement of the hole. To prevent this, always secure the hub (end) of the tube. Either tape it to the skin, or secure it to clothes.
- When you pull on the tube lightly, there should be less than 1/4th of an inch between the disc and the skin. If there is more than this, then it is too loose because the disc has moved outwards too much. If you (or someone else) feels comfortable manipulating this, you can cinch it VERY gently, until it is snug against the skin, but NOT tight. If it is too tight, then you can cause damage to the intestines and skin. If you don’t feel comfortable with doing this, please come to see us.
