Internet
Although an Australian company invented WiFi, access to the internet is not as readily available in Australia as it is in the US, and when it is available it is usually of limited bandwidth. Things are changing rapidly but in a country with several incredibly isolated cities with vast distances between them, the network is not yet as extensive as it is in the more crowded United States. Indeed, Australia’s internet ranks 50th in the world in terms of connectivity speed.
Here is what we can say based on previous experience: We had (albeit slow) access through the hostel in Darwin, limited to no access in Kakadu NP, fair access in Katoomba, very good access in Sydney, no access or expensive satellite access in Daintree National Park, and fair access in Yungaburra and Cairns. Other than the places we stay at, some restaurants and coffee shops also offer free WiFi, but you won’t be able to binge-watch entire seasons of The Walking Dead at any of these places. Be prepared to have to go days without or poor internet (unless it is through your phone, see below) on our trip. It’s actually kind of nice…we think. 🙂
Cell Phone Coverage
For security reasons, you will be REQUIRED to have a working cell-phone inside of Australia. You will be responsible for any and all charges acquired.
Cell phone coverage in Australia is very similar to the United States: readily available in and near major population centers and not so much in more rural areas.
Before embarking, check with your cell-phone provider about coverage in Australia. Cell phone and associated data plans (other than through internet as described above) are the responsibility of the student.
To learn more about available international plans, click on any of the following major providers, or call your customer service specialist.
The most common cell phone providers in Australia are Telstra, Vodafone, VirginMobile, and Optus. Some of these companies are associated with the above American providers. Be sure to inform yourself of available options before you leave to get the best deal.
Alternatively, you may be able to get your US phone unlocked so that you can then purchase a SIM-card in Australia. This is usually cheaper than an international plan. There are several cell phone shops within quick walking distance from the Darwin hostel. Providing cell phone coverage for traveling tourists is big business in Australia and you will have LOTS of options.
