Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) just celebrated its 20th year anniversary as a non-profit organization that has brought together students and farmworkers to not only collaborate, but to advocate for farmworker rights, improve farming and living conditions, and to promote social change for farmworking communities. Michelle Villegas, a Duke senior, did the SAF Into the Fields internship in 2010. As she puts it, this is not a “normal” Duke internship, and in order to understand how much this varies from an administrative desk job, Michelle depicts an interesting experience she had while on the job. Her perspective as a Mexicana/Salvadorian and a student from an elite university shows the unique insight that anyone could come away with from a SAF internship.
