Dine & DASH Into Wellness Study

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS STUDY?

Black Americans are 4 times more likely to develop kidney failure than White Americans. Diet can influence kidney health. We want to find out if diet coaching and cultural cooking classes will help Black adults who are at risk for developing kidney disease eat a healthier diet.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THIS STUDY?

If you choose to join this study, you will be asked to:

– Meet with a dietitian for a one-time one-on-one 30-minute video coaching
– Meet with a dietitian once per week as part of a group with other study participants for 16 weeks
10 of the group visit will be video visits lasting about 1 hour
6 of the group visits will be cooking sessions lasting about 1 to 1.5 hours
– Get advice about diet changes you can make to improve your health

You will be randomly assigned (like a coin flip) to 1 of 2 groups.

– If you’re assigned to Group A, you will start the program right away.
– If you’re assigned to Group B, you will have to wait 4 months before you start the program.

Regardless of what group you are assigned to, you will also be asked to complete 3 check up visits; one at the beginning of the study, one at 4 months and the last visit at 8 months.

During the study visits, you will:

– Have your blood drawn
– Have your blood pressure measured
– Give a urine sample
– Fill out surveys
– Keep a record of what you eat
– Record your blood pressure at home for 7 days

We will pay you for your time on the study and give you a home blood pressure monitor that you can keep after that study is over.
