Yanyou 燕幽 [northern China]

Also knownas youyan 幽燕, it refers to the northern part of China, especially in the premodern context. The core region of youyan consists of the northern part of today’s Hebei province, Beijing, Tianjin, and part of today’s Liangning province. Before the Tang dynasty, this region was called Youzhou 幽州, while in the Warring States period, this region was controlled by the Kingdom of Yan 燕. Here it refers to the capitol area.
