Shu jin, or Sichuan brocade, is a type of silk made in the area of Sichuan, dated back to two thousand years ago. It is created by weaving colorful, boiled silk threads into various geometric patterns and motifs. Sichuan brocade is one of China’s four most famous branches of brocade, the others being Yun 雲 brocade in Nanjing (for more information on Yun brocade/cloud brocade, see the entry of lüluo yunjin fu), Song 宋 brocade in Suzhou, and Zhuang 壯brocade in Guangxi. With its unique graceful bearing and bright, clear colors that mimic the style of Chinese-ink paintings, Sichuan brocade was put on the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.
