Shizhou 十州 [Ten Continents] and Sandao 三岛 [Three Islands] are legendary places and have Daoist significance. According to the Daoist Classics Tianhuang zhidao taiqing yuzhou 天皇至道太清玉册 [The Great Pure Jade Book of the Ultimate Dao of the Jade Emperor], compiled in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), the Ten Continents are Yingzhou瀛洲, Xuanzhou 玄洲, Changzhou 长洲, Liuzhou 流洲, Yuanzhou 元洲, Shengzhou 生洲, Zuzhou 祖洲, Yanzhou 炎洲, Fenglinzhou 凤麟洲, Jukuzhou聚窟洲. According to the anthology of the Daoist canon Junji qiqian 云笈七签 [The Seven Bamboo Tablets of the Cloudy Satchel], the Three Islands are Kunlun 昆仑, Fangzhang 方丈, Mt. Penglai 蓬莱丘.
