The term literally means two eight (“二” is “two” and “八” is “eight”), and in Chinese it refers to the age of sixteen. In ancient Chinese, if two numbers are given at the same time, then the term refers to the product of the two numbers. Therefore, “二八” refers to sixteen which is two times eight.
