Although in traditional Chinese society, marriage was usually arranged by the parents, there are occasions, especially in literary works, that young people were able to meet and fall in love with each other before marriage. In these situations, exchanging love tokens became their way of making vows to determine to be together. Typical love tokens included fans, handkerchiefs, hairpins, sachets, combs, etc. They were usually worn or held daily and were valued for being intimate to their original owners.
