In Chinese tradition, lingwei, or paiwei 牌位 [seat of the tablet], is a wooden tablet written vertically with the name of the deceased and is understood to be the substitute for the deceased in the human world. It has a holder to be placed on the table. When people died, their families would prepare a lingwei for them, doing proper rituals to appease their wandering souls, pay respect and ask for blessing and protection
