Hanjin 汗巾 was originally hidden inside of the sleeves and used to wipe up sweat or tears. Because it was also used to tie up one’s underwear, it also became a token of affection to be exchanged between couples. See the example of Jia Baoyu and Jiang Yuhan exchanging hanjin in Dream of the Red Chamber. Later, it also became an ornament tied on women’s waists.
