Tingcan 庭參 [a low, kneeling bow serving as an act of deep respect]

In imperial China, lower-level officials had to approach chiefs in official halls according to proper ceremonies and etiquette. For civil servants, this meant kneeling and bowing to the north until the officer stood to accept it; for military personnel, they had to kneel and kowtow to the north, proclaiming their titles until the officer sat and accepted it.
