The original text is chuanbang 傳梆 [send the message through beating the woodblock]. A bangzi 梆子 is an instrument made of wood or bamboo, that could make loud noise when being beaten. Premodern officials beat the clapper in Yamen to spread the news or to gather and disperse runners.
