Team Impact Exercise

Continuing in your teams of 6, work together to understand the possible unintended impact of your technical solutions on others and, perhaps, society at large.

  • Return to this slide deck to see what your team discussed last time and then update with new ideas.

This exercise will be conducted in three Stages (lasting roughly 10 minutes each).

  • After each Stage, we will call on some teams to present their results so that all teams present at some point during the exercise.

Stage 1

Start off by individually completing this survey regarding your level of privilege.

As a team,

  • discuss any feelings or surprises that came up while taking the test or when learning the class results (according to your comfort level)
  • identify privilege or bias might be embedded in your ideas

Stage 2

Apply the Design Thinking Six Hats activity to your ideas to critique them through different perspectives in order to see possible societal impacts. Use  assumptions about privilege and possible biases to try to understand the complexity of applying your ideas.

As a team decide on:

  • three possible assumptions, marginalizing effects, or biases in your ideas
  • two possible non-positive impacts based on what you uncovered

Stage 3

Apply this FCAI Ethics Exercise to your ideas to discover possible ethical quandaries that might result from your ideas. While applying these approaches, explore your personal ethical values as well as those that the team seems to develop during the discussion.

As a team decide on:

  • four ethical questions that might result from implementing any of your ideas
