Hello!

We are Duke students helping to raise funds for Instituto Cultural Bantu on Itapirica Island in Bahia, Brazil.  While enrolled in a capoeira class this semester we had the opportunity to meet and learn from the founder of Instituto Bantu: Mestre Roxinho was born and raised on Itapirica Island and has over 30 years of experience teaching capoeira in Brazil and abroad.   We wish to pay forward what we received from Mestre Roxinho this semester by helping him raise funds for the Bantu Institute.

Founded in January 2006, Instituto Cultural Bantu is an NGO with the mission to educate and empower undeserved youth and young adults through capoeira angola and other Afro-Brazilian cultural practices.  The word “Bantu” refers to a number of ethnolinguistic groups that live in West Central Africa; enslaved Bantu peoples were brought to Brazil beginning in the 16th century, and played a fundamental role in building the Brazilian nation and shaping its culture.

The Institute serves children and young adults in a community on Itaparica Island with high levels of poverty, hunger and school attrition.  Along with capoeira classes, Institute Bantu offers academic tutoring, access to digital technology, and hot meals.  Our campaign will raise funds for new appliances for a kitchen that serves 100 meals a day.

Your donations will contribute towards:

Refrigerator ~ $775

6 burner Stove  ~ $850

Chest Freezer ~ $825

Industrial Blender ~ $350

Total: $2,800 (RS$14,800)
