My alumni mentor, Clarice Hu, was incredibly helpful in providing guidance and advice for the next steps of my medical school career. As a previous Brodhead Fellow herself, she graciously shared her experiences and how her DukeEngage experiences shaped her journey towards medical school. Now as a current medical student, Clarice taught me the importance of continued civic engagement as part of the training and career in healthcare. For my professional development, I participated in a course called “Civic Engagement in American Democracy,” where I gained experience in the knowledge of civil policy and more specifically for my career, health policies and institutional barriers to healthcare.
