We established a partnership between our collaborating faculty and staff – representing the Center for Documentary Studies, the Spanish Language Program, The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, The Program in Latino/a Studies in the Global South, and DukeEngage on the Border/Encuentros de la Frontera – and local organizations representing the Latino community. We forged a partnership with two key collaborators, both of them Latino artists who already reside in Durham: one is visual artist and muralist, Cornelio Campos and the other is filmmaker, Mauricio Andrada. Through collaborative art and interpretation as well as bidirectional learning, this project addressed the various constituencies and the geopolitical implications surrounding immigration, immigration policy, border crossing, and integration of diasporic communities into local and national communities. Students and faculty had become better positioned to offer innovative solutions in the form of policy and research, as well as to help educate the greater community.
Hemos establecido un equipo entre profesores y personal del Centro para Estudios Documentales (CDS), el Programa de Español, el Centro para Estudios Latinoamericanos y del Caribe, el Programa de Latino/a Studies, y DukeEngage on the border/Encuentros de la Frontera, así como con organizaciones locales que trabajan con la comunidad latina. Asimismo, hemos forjado lazos con dos colaboradores de la comunidad: uno es Cornelio Campos, artista visual y muralista; el otro es Mauricio Andrada, realizador audiovisual. Por medio de la interpretación, el arte colaborativo y el aprendizaje bidireccional, este proyecto busca educar a los varios participantes sobre las implicaciones geopolíticas alrededor del tema de la inmigración, políticas migratorias, el cruce de fronteras y la integración de comunidades/grupos inmigrantes en la comunidad local y nacional. Tanto estudiantes como profesores han obtenido una mejor perspectiva sobre el tema que les permite ofrecer soluciones innovadoras en la forma de políticas e investigación, a la vez que buscan educar sobre el tema a la comunidad en general.
