Puentes de Doble Vía/ Two-Way Bridges
Borders and border walls separate us, language and culture divide us. In contrast, bridges connect, traverse, join, and provide means for traveling to new places and meeting new people. Bridges are about crossing boundaries, barriers, and borders.
Building two-way bridges is the central goal of this project and this exhibit.
Two-way bridges provide a way for people to travel in either direction, so that those from each side may overcome obstacles by beginning from either starting point. Two-way Bridges are about interchange and multidirectional travel.
Two-way bridges provide possibilities for new encounters, contacts, multilingual, and trans-disciplinary conversations, all creating possibilities for making change by anyone involved.
We have built bridges by having students from Duke and the broader Durham Latino community in the same classrooms involving three different courses and programs: Latin American Studies, Romance Languages, and the Center for Documentary Studies.
We have worked together as Duke faculty and artists from the community on the same team. Our coursework has involved all the participants in the planning as well as the implementation of ideas that have arisen from all the interactions between all. The artwork and learning that has resulted have also been multi-directional and trans-disciplinary.
Together we have forged new means of communicating stories through collaborations. The murals, videos, and photographs in this exhibit have been produced by Duke students, guest students, community members, and the Two Way Bridges team.

We have acted together and produced photos, videos, and research collaboratively.
We have met new people and become friends.
Once a divide has been crossed, one can never go back and be the same.
Puentes de Doble Vía / Two Way Bridges
Fronteras y muros fronterizos nos separan, el idioma y la cultura nos dividen. En contraste, los puentes conectan, comunican, unen y proporcionan medios para viajar a nuevos lugares y conocer gente nueva. Los puentes son para cruzar fronteras, superar barreras y límites.
La construcción de puentes de doble vía es el objetivo central de este proyecto y de esta exposición.
Two Way Bridges |Puentes de doble vía propicia una forma para que la gente viaje en cualquier dirección, de modo que los que habitan en cada lado puedan superar los obstáculos desde cualquier punto de partida. Two Way Bridges | Puentes de doble vía es sobre intercambio y viajes multidireccionales.
Two Way Bridges | Puentes de doble vía proporcionan posibilidades para nuevos encuentros, contactos y conversaciones multilingües y transdisciplinarias, usando todas las posibilidades de creación para generar un cambio en todas las personas involucradas.
Hemos construido puentes haciendo que estudiantes de Duke y de la comunidad Latina de Durham compartan las mismas aulas participando en tres cursos diferentes sobre: Estudios Latinoamericanos, Lenguas Romances y Estudios Documentales.
Hemos trabajado juntos profesores y artistas de la comunidad como un equipo. Nuestros cursos han involucrado a todos los participantes en la planificación, así como la puesta en marcha de las ideas que han surgido de las interacciones entre todos los participantes. Las piezas de arte y el aprendizaje que han resultado también han sido multi-direccionales y transdisciplinarios.
Juntos hemos forjado nuevas formas de comunicar historias a través de colaboraciones. Los murales, videos y fotografías en esta exposición han sido producidos por estudiantes de Duke, estudiantes invitados, miembros de la comunidad y el equipo de Puentes de Doble Vía.
