One of the most well-known figures of the temperance movement is Carrie Nation. In 1900, Nation started to repeatedly smash saloons with stones which she called smashers and her hatchet. Nation was arrested thirty times for her violent methods of protest. In the trials following her arrests, she often replaced traditional legal evidence with quotes from the Bible which she used to justify her actions. The particular verses she chose to quote tended to not explicitly mention alcohol, instead, they mentioned fighting for righteousness as well as general faith and operated under the idea that drinking alcohol was already established as a sin. Matthew 21:12  Nehemiah 4:14 James 4:7 Psalm 144:15 2 Chronicles 31:1 Ephesians 6:12
