Introduction

Each Carolinas conference includes a variety of different events, with some being large team projects and others being individual. The largest competitions typically tend to be society-wide competitions, of which each conference around the country must participate in at least 3. By winning these society-wide competitions, students have the opportunity to qualify for the ASCE Civil Engineering Student Championships. This year the championships will take place at Brigham Young University from June 20-22, 2024.

Events

Concrete Canoe – Society-Wide

The ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition provides students with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on practical experience while testing their skills with concrete mix designs and project management challenges. This elite competition combining engineering excellence, hydrodynamic design, and racing technique is known as the “America’s Cup of Civil Engineering.”

Steel Bridge – Society-Wide

The Student Steel Bridge Competition challenges students to an intercollegiate competition that supplements their education with a comprehensive, student-driven project experience from conception and design through fabrication, erection, and testing. The Duke ASCE chapter will not be participating in the steel bridge competition at the 2024 Carolinas Conference.

Surveying – Society-Wide

The educational and professional goals of this competition include a recognition of the importance of basic surveying principles to all civil engineering projects. Students will be required to use standard field and office equipment and procedures to solve real-world problems encountered in industry.

Sustainability – Society-Wide

For 2023, the fictional City of ASCE wants to revitalize one downtown block of Engineer Street. The city hopes to turn the underutilized area into a gathering place for the community and reimagine the surrounding spaces to create a cohesive and walkable corridor.

Mead Paper – Society-Wide

The prize was established and endowed in 1939 by Daniel W. Mead, Hon.M.ASCE, a Society past president. The contest provides an opportunity for alert young civil engineers to further their professional development and gain national attention. Students must write a paper and give a 10-minute presentation about a topic related to civil engineering ethics and present it to be judged at the conference.

Fresh-more

Freshmen and sophomores are only eligible to compete in this competition. Teams of 3-5 students will be tasked with a creative engineering challenge related to the work of civil engineering. No technical experience will be required and students will have 1 hour to construct a solution to an engineering problem.

Quiz Bowl

Student in teams of 4-5 will compete in a quiz bowl style competition and tested on questions related to information on the Fundaments of Engineering exam. The competition consists of several rounds and teams with the lowest scores are eliminated each round.

Transportation

Students are challenged to solve a transportation engineering problem within an hour of receiving it and give a presentation of their proposed solution to a panel of professional engineers.

Enviro/Hydro

Students are challenged to solve a environmental/hydraulics engineering problem within an hour of receiving it and give a presentation of their proposed solution to a panel of professional engineers.

Geotechnical

Students are challenged to solve a geotechnical engineering problem within an hour of receiving it and give a presentation of their proposed solution to a panel of professional engineers.

T-Shirt Competition

Students are tasked with designing the most creative T-shirt design for their school. This competition is voted upon by the students and does not count towards points scored in the team total.
