Cherokee, North Carolina
In the early 1800’s the federal government’s desire for gold and land in the southern States culminated with the passage of The Indian Removal Act of 1830 during Andrew Jackson’s administration. The result was the forced relocation of over 100,000 indigenous people from the southeastern United States resulting in thousands of deaths, loss of tribal homeland, and an assault on tribal culture.
As part of our work in our own state, in 2023 the America’s Hallowed Ground team identified Cherokee, NC as a potential core site. The work is ongoing and our goal is to listen and learn how the America’s Hallowed Ground team may support the work of Cherokee artists or Unto These Hills, one of the oldest outdoor dramas in the United States which recounts the tragedy of the Trail of Tears.
As our work continues, progress will be documented here.
