America’s Hallowed Ground Sites

America’s Hallowed Ground uses the multidisciplinary arts to share the stories of places and moments in which America has fallen short of our noble ideals of equality, justice, and democracy. These sites remind us of our vows kept and unkept, reveal our responsibilities met and unmet, and motivate us to pursue a more perfect union. The America’s Hallowed Ground team is working to tell and preserve stories in many places.

Durham, NC

Our exploration starts with where we live—Durham, NC— home to Indigenous people, descendants of the enslaved, freedom fighters, Black entrepreneurs, and recent arrivals to the United States.

Wilmington, NC

A violent coup by white supremacists in 1898 overthrew a democratically elected government in Wilmington and shattered a thriving African-American community.

Cherokee, NC

The forced relocation of over 100,000 indigenous people from the southeastern United States resulted in thousands of deaths, loss of tribal homeland, and an assault on tribal culture.
