Professor Elk is a Geriatrics, Gerontology, and Palliative Care professor whose research focuses on determining communities’ cultural values and preferences for care and communication at end of life.  Using Community Based Participatory Research, her NIH-funded research focuses on collaborating with underserved populations, in particular, rural African-American communities, to determine effective culturally based palliative care programs.  Professor Elk serves as the Associate Director of the Southeast Institute for Innovation in Palliative and Supportive Care, and served as guest editor of the Journal of Palliative Medicine’s Special Issue, “Palliative and End of Life Care for African-Americans.” She is widely published and has received six national awards for her research.
