South Korea Manager

Shin Tae-yong

Shin Tae-yong, appointed South Korean manager in 2017, was the “obvious choice given his familiarity with the players and his successes with the youth National teams”(“17 For 2017: The Rise Of The Tinkerman: Shin Taeyong, KNT Manager | Tavern Of The Taeguk Warriors”). As a player, he spent almost the entirety of his career at one club, not something you see that often anymore. He racked up 296 appearances and 76 goals as an attacking midfielder for Seongnam FC. He also made numerous appearances with the South Korean U-17,20, and 23 teams before playing 23 times for the national team. He won 13 major titles as a player before beginning his managerial career with the same club, Seongnam FC. There he won 3 more major titles before his various stints managing the youth National teams and working as an assistant for the national team. He has been nicknamed the “tinkerman” for his constant adjustments to the team, and while it has paid off thus far, many believe this inability to keep a fixed system may cost them come the World cup. The Korean FA has placed its faith in Shin Tae-yong’s knowledge of the Korean youth teams and national teams, and if Korea can emerge from the group stage against Germany, Mexico, and Sweden to the round of 16, he will have repaid their faith ten-fold.
