Daniela Radvak

danielaRadvak
Hi everyone! My name is Daniela, I’m a current senior studying mechanical engineering. I am half Canadian and half Mexican, but I spent my life growing up in Arizona. So I love going hiking and swimming, two of the biggest (and kind of only) things to do in Arizona. Some of my other hobbies include biking, travelling when I can, playing board games, and drinking wine. But I love talking about all sorts of stuff, so come get to know me! I’m super excited for rush and can’t wait to meet everyone!

Maddy Katz

Madelaine

Hey y’all! My name is Maddy and I am a junior at Duke from Raleigh, NC. I am currently studying abroad in Vietnam, South Africa, or Argentina trying to be cool or something. However, I am so ridiculously excited to meet you sometime in the near future, and I would LOVE to chat in any format you deem appropriate, fb, text, or skype! I’m majoring Global Health and Cultural Anthropology, and I am especially interested looking at the social determinants of health outcomes like gender and education, but I have absolutely no idea what’s going on after graduating. I love being outdoors (hiking, scuba, biking), social justice, getting lost in new places, and am constantly searching for new and improved ways to eat avocados.

LESSBEFRANDS

Emerson Lovell

Emerson

I, Emerson Lovell, am a junior from Harlem, NY. I am a History and Political Science major. I am the President of the Kappa Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. I am also a member of the Duke Club Volleyball team, Black Student Alliance, Students of the Caribbean Association, Black Pre-law Association and a Mary Lou Intern for the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture. I love to be around people and have fun. I believe fostering relationships with others is the greatest power we have as humans. I love to play basketball, pick up football, chess, mlabalaba (South African War Game), and soccer. My favorite sports teams are the NY Giants (championship coming in 2016 just wait on it), NY Rangers (Henrik Lundqvist is the best goalkeeper in the league hands down), NY Yankees (Core Four fan for life!!!!), Miami Heat (D-Wade is the third best 2-guard in history and I stand by that wholeheartedly!), and Real Madrid (Benzema, Ronaldo, Bale, Ramos and Rodriguez how can you not like this team?). My favorite food is pancakes, they make me way too happy and I was slightly addicted for 14 years, however on campus Pitchforks is my favorite food joint because of those Thai Chili wings!! I don’t like books but if I had to choose a favorite one it would have to be Great Gatsby (Jay Gatsby is the epitome of perseverance lets be real here people). Favorite Video Game is Fable, lets you be a little good and a little bad, however, my favorite system is the Nintendo Game Boy hands down but you should keep them up if you want to play since its a handheld system.

David Robertson

Hey y’all, my name is David and I am a senior from Fairfax, VA studying public policy. I’m still trying to figure out the world and listen as much as I can to see what paths excite me, but so far I’ve narrowed it down to startups, international relations, tech, cities, urban development, politics (the list goes on…) so feel free to talk to me about any of those things or any of your own cool quirks! I am also a huge Lord of the Rings fan and can pretty much recite the entire movie trilogy while watching them. I’m also the oldest of five kids, so I love being around noisy, rambunctious places and you can almost alway find me in Vondy.

I joined the Ubu family after my sophomore year and have loved having it as a part of my Duke experience. You can find fellow Ubu Mansoor and I chilling in our apartment in West Village and are both excited for rush this year!

Sarah Hakani

Sarah
Aaaay! My name is Sarah, pronounced Saaaah-raaah. I was born and raised in Atlanta (hometown of Young Thug and Outkast godbless). I am studying Neuroscience at Duke and hope to NEVER enter the world of medicine. I want to go into education and child policy, and absolutely love conversation regarding education issues in the US and around the world. I love Mario Kart. And not like those people who are like oh mah gaaaah Mario games, no. I LOVE Mario Kart and I will destroy anyone who tries to challenge me. I also love music very much (cliché, but anything, anything but country)—come by my apartment for jams anytime, or even just to discuss the lyrical intricacies of Migos and Trinidad James and Rich Homie Quan etc. I like to live my life by one lesson my dad taught me a while ago: “From the moment you’re born to the second you die, all you do is learn.” Teach me about your passions, about issues you’re following, about random ass talents you have, whatever. I probably know 0.12809% of what I want to know during my lifetime, and that’s what I strive to absorb from the wonderful community (UBULOVE) around me everyday!

Brianna

Brianna

Hi my name is Brianna! Ubuntu has meant a lot to me, and rushing as a sophomore, I deliberately rushed Ubuntu searching for a community. These crazy kids challenge me every day and we have fun in the meantime. When I’m not in my apartment I am playing the trombone in DUMB or working somewhere around campus. I’ve given a couple of ubuchats too—on vulnerability and representation of women of color in the media. Let’s talk about it sometime! I hope you come out to rush and if you want to get in touch feel free to email me at blw20@duke.edu

Rachel Anderson

RachelAnderson

After studying away from Duke for the past year, Rachel is thrilled to be returning to section in January 2015. She is an economics and computer science nerd who likes to lift weights and learn languages in her free time. Rachel’s natural habitat is South Florida, so during the winter months, she can be found sipping tea under many piles of blankets. For those seeking friendship, Rachel accepts bribes in the form of cooked vegetables, tropical fruits, and running socks.

Anna Vivian

Anna
Hi rushees! (And Mom. I bet you’re reading this, Mom.) I’m Anna and I was born in a pink hospital in Hawaii. That’s probably the coolest fun fact about me. I love tutoring young learners and spend most of my time with the nine-and-under crowd. Ubuntu is one of my favorite things. Other favorite things: camping/backpacking, going to jazz at the Mary Lou, running into people on campus and starting to chat and ending up late to class. I’m also pretty passionate about dogs, ice cream, and grilled cheeses. If you want to talk about physics or art history, I’m your girl, because those are my majors. With a minor in global health? My academic advisor doesn’t get it either. One time I cried in his office. It was pretty crazy.
You can pretty much find me anytime in the gardens or on a swingy bench. Writing a bio is hard but I’d love to chat for real sometime! (I promise.) Shoot me an email at anna.vivian@duke.edu, or see if you can spot me on campus. I’d be so amazed I wouldn’t even be creeped out.

Andrew Bartuska

Andrew
Hey everyone! My name is Andrew Bartuska. I was born in Kentucky and went to high school in Florida where my parents still live and it’s warm and sunny and awesome. I’m studying Neuroscience and am also really interested in Spanish and languages (because it blows my mind that speaking another language potentially lets you meet another 330 million people). I’m involved in RUF, Honor Council, and volunteer at the Cancer Center and am also an RA on East Campus (EC4lyfe!). My goal is to one day be a doctor and travel the world. I’d love to talk/hang out/East-campusbond, so definitely reach out!

Briana Acosta

BrianaAcosta
Hey y’all! I’m Briana and I’m a senior from Houston, Texas. I’m currently double majoring in Cultural Anthropology and Global Health. I’m also involved in the DCC (Duke Catholic Center), WISER, pBUILD, and GANO. I’m very friendly (and sassy) if I do say so myself ;), so feel free to come talk to me about anything anytime… Ubuntu, police brutality, tenting, fake tortillas, intimate partner violence (IPV) among immigrant Latinas (the topic of my senior thesis that I just started), reggaeton… the list goes on. I’ll probably be in section most of the time (possibly having a dance party with my roommate/best friend Ashley), so feel free hit us up if you want to hang! Ubuntu’s honestly amazing, so I hope you love it as much as I do! Cant wait to meet all of you 🙂

Abby Birrell

Abby
Hi my name is Abby! I grew up in Georgia. I have two dogs and love all dogs lots. I am studying global health with a focus in mental health and international comparative studies with a focus in Latin America. I am on Duke’s cycling team and love down hills (not the up ones) and going fast. I crave chocolate cake often. My goals are to travel the world. I love meeting new people and being outside and beating Dan Moore in handstands contests.

Stanley Yuan

StanleyHey! I’m Stanley, a current junior majoring in electrical computer engineering and computer science. In reality though, I *should* be majoring in trying to figure out my life. I like everything, from partying to social justice to the NBA to education policy to late night life conversations. But really, I like talking about anything. If I’m not already interested in something, after 10 minutes of conversation about it, I probably will be. Yara, another fantastic Ubu, recently converted me to a One Direction fanatic after explaining their life story to me in an hour.

I’ve been involved in a lot of things on campus (Women’s Center, the Chronicle’s Editorial Board, Common Ground, dPS, etc.) but perhaps my proudest achievement is the one time that I actually cooked my own meal in my Central apartment. (Central is great by the way – I don’t know a single person who lives on Central and doesn’t like it.)

Ubuntu has meant a lot to me as one of the communities that I care about the most at Duke, so feel free to ask me about that (or anything else)!

Miguel Guevara

Miguel
Tis the prodigal son of Ubuntu who hath returned after a many long bout of self-reflection and indecisiveness. If you have half an hour, I would like to share with you where I am from. I hail from a German town of exquisite Germaness in Germany – Bad Krueznach. My mother is from Austria and my father is a Hispanic-American from Texas making me the Austro-Mexcian-Texan conglomerate that stands before you. Tis true, I eat schnitzel like nobody’s business and I ride my horse (iron horse à bike) to class daily. I have travelled extensively throughout my childhood and have lived in Germany and Japan for extensive periods. My language skills are as of yet still laughable however.

My academic interests center on international relations and global affairs so I plan on being a Poli Sci and history double major. If you have interests in these or any other matters you can always come by to have a discussion/virulent debate with me.

Out of class, I compete with larger-than-I megamen on the rugby pitch playing rugby and doing other rugby things. I am also active in goings on around campus and Ubuntu’s social scene. I am also a self-styled Quentin Tarantino “fan MAN”, so if you enjoy his films you have a friend in me. If you enjoy bachata and salsa dancing you also have a fan in me.

This is very important. As I have not been on campus this semester I do not know any of you rushees. Thus please send me an email and introduce yourself! Photo collages, 80s montage videos, and drunken selfies are encouraged. If you play rugby, are interested in playing rugby, or have never heard of the game and wanna give it a try, CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY. If you are a heavy drinker and have an affinity to the devil’s syrup CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY. If you are simply awesome CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY. I look forward to seeing you all!

(Lauren) Harper

Harper
Hey y’all my name is Harper and I’m a born and bred Californian who likes to talk about concrete way too much (join Civil Engineering! We’re super fun!). You’ll find me either studying in the Chapel Basement with fellow Presbyterians or enjoying a craft beer at Fullsteam with fellow Presbeerterians. Around Ubuntu, I’m internal programming coordinator which means I plan all the fun stuff. I’m also the co-president of Duke Voices for Interfaith Action and work at the rock wall. I may sound busy but there’s a million things I haven’t done… just you wait!

Emma Achola

EmmaAchola

Hi ya’ll! My name is Emma. I hail from the great state of Georgia. I’m a sophomore at this fine institution for higher learning, and I am majoring in Public Policy Studies while also doing the pre-med thing. When I’m not on the school grind, I like wasting hours binge watching Netflix, I love watching the English Premiere League (best league in the world, go reds! Someone watch with me!), and absolutely adore the works of Issa Rae (forever an awkward black girl). I don’t know much about life or who I am, yet, but hey isn’t that what being young is all about??? I love forward to enveloping you in Ubu love! Til then, peace.
