New Symantec anti-virus software available for personal use

Duke is transitioning to new anti-virus protection software, which means that students, faculty and staff who currently use McAfee on their personal computers should switch to Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) as soon as possible.

samantecThe software is available to Duke faculty, staff and students for their personal computers at no cost. Virus protection is critical to maintain a secure computing environment, and users are encouraged to transition their home computers from McAfee to Symantec as soon as possible for uninterrupted protection.

Symantec was selected by Duke’s Information Security Office and Office of Information Technology after an in-depth evaluation of several anti-virus products, based on its strong performance and detection rates.

Users will need to download the new software, uninstall existing anti-virus software and install the Symantec software on personal machines. Instructions are available in the knowledgebase for:

Duke’s license with McAfee has expired; users will continue to receive anti-virus definitions but will not receive future product updates.

Duke IT staff will work with faculty and staff on the transition for Duke-managed machines. If you have questions about your Duke machine, please contact your departmental IT staff.
