Poems

If you’re a dog, guess I’m a bone

but we both know I’m too soft for that

you chew me up, a piece of gum

when you’re gone, can’t spit me out, I’m stuck

wondering if it was cause I laughed

when you said I taste like licorice

If you’re a cat, I’m crowded nights

you try to hide, I make you dinner

and just like that, you’re back inside

and all your judgement blinded by the

pretty lights and smells of company

it’s enough to lure you right back in

if you’re a rat, a sewer rat

then we’re just alike, one and the same

I seek you out, walk you around

Try as you may, can’t escape we’re tied

together forever burning us out

try as you may, the night your mistress will be

try as you may, for you’ve imprinted on me

try as you may, you wanted eternity

and now you see, it’s self-inflicted my dear

howl at the moon with me

the clicking sound when

two stares fall onto each other

and the world gets a little less lonely

is the sound of gunshots in a noir film

set under a firecracker-lit sky

shot we were when our eyes ran

from the light of the summer moon

to each other’s gaze

does your world feel less lonely when I look at you?

into rainy season we walk unprotected

and like drops our longing looks

hit us like tiny little bullets on ice

cracking foundation, nervously, thinking

“So.”

commit us to memory with

the sound of camera shutter

I embrace the memory of you

turning the movie into a backdrop

to aim at my heart when you turned around

and looked into my eyes
