Freddy is originally from Honduras, but he is no newcomer to the United States- he immigrated alone at the age of 27 to escape the frequent violence and find a better life for his family. He has now lived in the country for almost 30 years, 28 of which he spent here in Durham. Before Durham, Freddy lived in Colorado and Georgia, but he and his family have found greater work and educational opportunities in North Carolina. In all three states, he felt much safer than he did in Honduras, primarily because the police force is more responsive than and not corrupt like the police in Honduras.
For the past 28 years, Freddy has worked in construction, primarily as a carpenter, building framing and installing sheetrock and trim for new houses. Though he used to work as a mechanic when he lived in Honduras and as a carpenter for buildings when he first immigrated, he now only works on houses because it is more financially beneficial and less repetitive. Freddy works approximately eight hours a day five or six days a week, and he has worked for contractors on projects all over North Carolina. Working for contractors allows him to better provide for his family than he would if he worked for a company, however, he does not receive the security and benefits a company would offer and he has to provide his own tools. Luckily, Freddy has never had an accident on the job because he takes the safety of himself and his fellow workers very seriously and always prioritizes it over the job.
One aspect of construction work Freddy particularly enjoys is the community. Besides always working with his brother, he is constantly meeting new individuals who are carpenters, plumbers, electricians, etc. He loves getting to know all the members of the team, including his boss. He describes his boss as being very understanding of the fact that everyone is human, experiences the same human emotions he feels, and should be treated equally. Freddy repeatedly emphasized the idea that everyone should be viewed and treated equally, no matter if they’re American, Honduran, Mexican, Salvadorian, etc.
Freddy also finds great community in attending church every Thursday evening and Sunday morning. Religion plays a large role in his life, guiding many of his decisions, including his choice to stop drinking ten years ago and stop smoking nine years ago. Though some other construction workers smoke and/or drink, Freddy believes he can better care for his family by not engaging in these activities because they are expensive and detrimental to one’s health.
The most important part of Freddy’s life is his family, including his wife of 25 years and his three kids, ages 21, 15, and 10. Freddy is fully invested in supporting his kids so they can succeed in school and attend a university. He noted that the schools here are not as laid back as the ones he attended in Honduras, but they are more prepared, supported, and safe, giving his children many more opportunities than he had growing up. Outside of school, he supports his children in their extracurriculars, including his daughter playing on school basketball team and his son playing soccer. Freddy also enjoys refereeing and playing soccer and has earned many trophies over the years.
As long as he can work here with a steady job, consistently provide for his family, have a nice house, and benefit from a safe community, Freddy does not ever plan to leave. He wants to continue contributing to the local community in positive ways that help dispel any anti-immigrant or anti-hispanic feelings stemming from the false American belief that immigrants participate in illegal activity and do not work hard. For the past 30 years, Freddy has worked hard to build a welcoming, clean, and safe community where families like his have the support they need to succeed.

Freddy es de Honduras, pero él no es un recién llegado a los Estados Unidos- él inmigró solo cuando tenía 27 años para escapar de la violencia frecuente y encontrar una vida mejor por su familia. Ahora, ha vivido en los Estados Unidos por casi 30 años y en Durham por 28 años. Antes de vivir aquí, Freddy vivió en Colorado y Georgia, pero él y su familia han encontrado mejores oportunidades educativos y de trabajo en Carolina del Norte. En todos los lugares que ha vivido, se ha sentido más seguro que en Honduras porque la policía es más receptivo y no hay corrupción como en Honduras.
Durante los últimos 28 años, Freddy ha trabajado en construcción como un carpintero por nuevas casas, construir armazones e instalar sheetrock y guarniciones. Trabajar para contratistas le permite proveer mejor a su familia, pero él no recibe la seguridad y los beneficios que ofrecer una empresa y necesita proveer sus propias herramientas. Afortunadamente, Freddy nunca ha tenido un accidente en el trabajo porque ha priorizado la seguridad de sí mismo y sus compañeros de trabajo.
Un aspecto de la construcción que disfruta particularmente es la comunidad. Además de trabajar siempre con su hermano, se conoce constantemente a nuevos individuos que son carpinteros, fontaneros, electricistas, etc. Le encanta conocer a todos los miembros del equipo, incluyendo a su jefe. Él describe a su jefe como muy comprensivo del hecho de que cada trabajador es humano y experimenta las mismas emociones humanas que él siente, y por eso, debe ser tratado por igual. Freddy enfatizó repetidamente la idea de que todo el mundo debe ser visto y tratado por igual, no importa si son estadounidenses, hondureños, mexicanos, salvadoreños, etc.
Freddy también encuentra una comunidad en asistir a la iglesia cada jueves por la noche y cada domingo por la mañana. La religión desempeña un papel importante en su vida, guiar muchas de sus decisiones, incluyendo su decisión de dejar de beber hace diez años y dejar de fumar hace nueve años. Aunque algunos otros trabajadores de la construcción fuman y/o beben, Freddy cree que puede cuidar mejor para su familia si no participa en estas actividades porque son costosas y perjudiciales para su salud.
Por él, la parte de su vida más importante es su familia, incluyendo su esposa de 25 años y sus tres hijos que tenía 21, 15, y 10 años. Freddy está dedicado completamente a apoyar a sus hijos para que puedan tener éxito en la escuela y asistir a una universidad. Señaló que las escuelas aquí son menos relajados y más preparados, apoyados y seguros que los en Honduras, y por eso, sus hijos tener muchas más oportunidades de lo que tenía cuando era niño. Fuera de la escuela, él apoya a sus hijos en los extracurriculares, incluyendo a su hija jugando el baloncesto en el equipo de la escuela y su hijo jugando al fútbol. Freddy disfruta también arbitrar y jugar al fútbol y ha ganado muchos trofeos de fútbol durante su vida.
Mientras que él puede trabajar aquí con un trabajo estable, proveer para su familia constantemente, tener una casa agradable, y contribuir a y beneficiarse de una comunidad segura, Freddy nunca planea salir. Él quiere seguir contribuyendo a la comunidad local de maneras positivas que ayudan a disipar cualquier sentimiento anti-inmigrante o anti-hispano derivado de la creencia falsa estadounidense de que los inmigrantes participan en actividades ilegales y no trabajan duro.
