Winter Forum: Crisis Near Fiery Cross Reef
A naval incident near Fiery Cross Reef, the man-made island in the South China Sea, spirals the U.S. into a national security crisis. Students will work in teams to diagnose the crisis (military, diplomatic, cyber, intelligence and policy realms) and prescribe a way out to avoid the next world war.
This was the scenario 90 Duke undergraduate students walked into on January 7th for Duke’s 2018 Winter Forum. A Sanford-centric contingent of faculty led this year’s winter forum which simulated a foreign policy crisis revolving around the real-world, ongoing tension between the US and China in the South China Sea. Faculty, such as Triangle Center’s David Schanzer, led student teams that represented agencies and departments within the national security apparatus and coached them on responding to the unfolding crisis.
