Tarkovsky Poster Series

by Jeremy Chen.
This is a series of posters for Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky’s seven feature films.
I focused on incorporating thematically relevant symbols and scenes from each film. I wanted the set of posters to be stylistically consistent, but also have each poster reflect the distinct aesthetic choices made in its corresponding film.
I used a combination of retouched stills and cutouts from Tarkovsky’s films as well as illustration done in Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop. Tarkovsky is known for his use of the long take and deep focus, which result in serene and complex compositions. I tried to capture some of this sense of calm using central composition, strong lines and different types of symmetry. He also notably uses both black and white and color film across his work (and sometimes alternates between the two within a given film); this choice is also reflected in the poster series.
