Outer space is a strategic opportunity for Duke. Space has vast potential and Duke is in a unique position as a university with engineering, medical, law, policy, and business schools — not to mention our proximity to Ft. Bragg, a major military base. In fact, Bank of America valued the space industry by 2030 at $1.4 trillion. The window of opportunity is only just opening for the future of space. But universities are not preparing students for a future that will heavily rely on space. We need engineers, doctors, lawyers, policy analysts, businessmen, and military professionals ready to tackle all manner of space-related issues. A space initiative could be the champion of Duke’s second century. We have the institutional structure necessary for a comprehensive space studies program, and Duke could help build the future of humanity in space. Check out the “Our Vision” page for more details!
