PiE: Program in Education
PiE offers courses and supervised field experiences for students interested in examining critical issues in society related to education including instruction in teaching practices in elementary and middle school science. Many education courses also provide students with supervised service-learning experiences directly related to their academic coursework through partnerships with local schools. PiE also offers two teacher preparation programs leading to eligibility for North Carolina licensure to teach at either the Elementary or Secondary school level.

MAT: Master of Arts in Teaching
The MAT program offers secondary certification in several areas (Sciences, Mathematics, English and others). A MAT in science combines graduate level work in the sciences with education courses and a two-semester internship under the direction of carefully selected and trained mentor teachers in Durham’s public high schools. Graduates from this program are eligible for teacher certifications issued by the state of North Carolina.

Preparing Future Faculty
The Preparing Future Faculty program at Duke provides a yearlong experience for PhD students and postdocs to prepare them for the multiple roles they may be asked to assume as future faculty members in a variety of academic institutions. The program provides a wider range of educational experiences than are generally available to students in their Duke departments.
