January and March: teaching and research labs
Not all of our surplus go overseas! We also donate to our local teaching and research labs.
In January we donated expired surgical drapes, microscope slides, PPE, towels, instruments and other supplies to the NC Shark Conservancy in Manteo, NC where they are performing autopsies and other research to better understand shark populations off the coast. In March, we donated expired orthopedic devices and instruments to the Duke School of Medicine Human Fresh Tissue & Gross Anatomy Lab used by our orthopedic faculty, fellows and residents for teaching and research.
March: Durham, NC
Several cartons of PPE and phlebotomy supplies, specimen containers and other items were donated to support a community health screening project being conducted by Duke School of Nursing faculty member, Tonia Poteat, PhD, MPH, PA-C.
April: Tanzania
Hutton Chapman, MD is a Duke pediatric hematologist/oncologist REMEDY as provided supplies with previously to support his research in Tanzania adapting chemotherapy regimens for their safe use in low resource settings.
April: Nigeria
Maggie Higdon is Duke respiratory therapist who traveled to Lagos, Nigeria with a team sponsored by Hospitals for Humanity, which performs free open-heart surgeries to children in resource-constrained areas. She was able to take 2 checked bags of luggage with a variety of med-surg supplies to support the team.
April: Philippines
Maggie Baker is a Duke PA student who organized a shipment of 2 large bin of supplies to the plastics and reconstructive surgeon she had worked with in Washington State. He volunteers with Operation YOJ, which provides cleft lip correction and other surgeries in areas of need. https://operationyoj.com/
June: Liberia
A donation of 12 pallets of a variety of med-surg supplies and PPE were made to the Liberia Global Health & Surgery Consortium. This is a physician and healthcare worker led NGO dedicated to strengthening Liberia’s health systems and focuses on integrating education, clinical innovation, and equity to improve local healthcare delivery and patient safety. This donation was organized by its founder, Dr. Carolyn Baindu (right in photo) with assistance from Duke nurse manager, Amanda Thomas and packing and loading help from our REMEDY volunteers.
