Partnered Program Catalyst Grants
Regeneration Next’s Partnered Program Catalyst Grants aim to encourage new discoveries and applications in regenerative science and medicine, leading to submission of collaborative and interdisciplinary program project (or similar) grant applications. Our goal is to stimulate new collaborative projects that lead to larger grants.
Regeneration Next will award two-year grants to groups of 4 or more Duke PIs. Before the end of the 2-year period, a complete P01 (or other comparable multi-investigator project proposal) should be ready for submission to the funding agency of choice.
In the spirit of encouraging investment in projects that directly examine mechanisms and applications of tissue regeneration, RNI will match up to $125,000 of departmental/ division/ center funding per year, for a total of $250,000 in RNI funding per award over a two-year period. Applicants should secure a commitment for matching funds from a second source prior to submitting the Catalyst grant proposals.
We expect up to two grants to be awarded in this funding cycle. Funds will be paid out in four equal installments every six months, contingent upon successful progress in both preliminary results and writing of the full proposal document. At the 18-month mark, a first draft of the full project proposal is expected, and by the end of the 24-month award period, we expect the proposal to be submitted to the funding agency.

- 1. Cover page with proposal title, PI names and affiliations;
- 2. A six-page proposal (suggested: Arial 11 point, 0.5” margins) containing:
- – A summary of the proposed research plan and target funding agency for submission;
- – Initial preliminary data including any published and unpublished results;
- – Defined projects and cores/infrastructure, with roles of PIs defined for each;
- – Key personnel (PIs, trainees, technicians) who will be supported by this budget, and their roles.
- 3. Preliminary budget table (download suggested template at this link: Catalyst Grant Budget template) and an accompanying brief budget narrative (1 page or less);
- 4. Letter of commitment of matching funds, signed by the department/ division head;
- 5. NIH Biosketches of all PIs involved in the project.
Proposals should be submitted as a single PDF file to Sharlini Sankaran, Executive Director of Regeneration Next (Sharlini.email@example.com) no later than 11:59 pm on the due date. Proposals will be reviewed by a panel organized by Regeneration Next.
- – All faculty members with a primary appointment in any School of Medicine, School of Engineering, or Trinity School of Arts and Sciences department are eligible to apply;
- – Non-Duke faculty and entities will not be eligible for Catalyst grant funding, but may be included as collaborators on the project;
- – Proposals must have a clear focus on tissue regeneration, tissue engineering, and/or regenerative medicine.
Exclusions: We do not expect to allow support of the following expenses by Catalyst grant funds.
- – Large equipment purchases of greater than $25,000;
- – Office equipment such as stationery and furniture;
- – PI salary;
- – Computers and software, except for those needed to generate and/or analyze data pertaining to the grant;
- – F&A or space costs.
