Our Curriculum

Duke’s OMPT Fellowship Curriculum offers a comprehensive, immersive, and hands-on training experience, led by expert faculty dedicated to developing advanced clinical reasoning. Designed to cultivate clinical excellence, the curriculum is structured around six core modules that integrate didactic instruction, case-based learning, and hands-on practice of advanced manual therapy techniques.

  1. Foundations – Builds a strong foundation in historical and contemporary OMPT principles, fundamentals of manipulation, clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice, pain science, health disparities, and DEI.
  2. Cervical Spine – Covers cervical spine care examination, evaluation and treatment including background knowledge, triage, and various intervention approaches.
  3. Lumbar Spine – Provides an in-depth exploration of lumbar spine assessment and management, including background, appropriate triage and screening, and specialized topics.
  4. Lower Quarter – Focuses on lower quarter conditions with emphasis on background, examination, evaluation, interventions, and post-operative management.
  5. Upper Quarter – Examines upper quarter pathologies, integrating background knowledge, triage, examination/evaluation, interventions, post-operative management, and advanced techniques.
  6. Special Topics – Encompasses diagnostic imaging, TMJ management, D1 training room experiences, networking opportunities with Duke professionals, and fellow-led didactic sessions.

Beyond the structured curriculum, Fellows-in-Training are encouraged to engage in national and state conferences such as APTA NC, AAOMPT, and CSM—fostering professional growth and expanding their networks within the field. Additionally, Fellows-in-Training gain valuable teaching experience by actively contributing to the Duke DPT program as teaching assistants for orthopedic and manual therapy coursework, further refining their clinical expertise.
