1.  How was I selected?

Participants were drawn from publicly available birth records gathered from the Durham County Register of Deeds. Researchers gathered every single birth record for children born in Durham County at Duke University or Durham Regional between January 1st, 2014 and June 3oth, 2014.

2.  Was my child selected as a result of race, marital status, insurance status, disabilities, abnormal behaviors, etc.?

No. All participants were selected based upon child date of birth, Durham County residence, and whether or not they gave birth to their child at Duke University Hospital or Duke Regional Hospital. Researchers only had access to information that is include on the publicly available birth records at the Durham County Register of Deeds. No additional information was used in the selection process.

3.  How did you get my contact information?

The contact information that we gathered and used was available on the public birth records at the Durham County Register of Deeds. If researchers were unable to reach participants through the information provided on the birth records, then other public information sources were used such as the White Pages, Facebook, MySpace, and publicly available tax records.

4.  Does the interview have to be conducted in my home?

No, the interview does not have to be conducted at your home. While the majority of the interviews are conducted in participant homes, we have also met participants at their place of work or a public space such as the library or at our office. The interview can be conducted anywhere that the participant feels comfortable and is safe for both the mom and the interviewers.

5.  Can my spouse/partner/nanny complete the interview on my behalf?

While your spouse/partner or childcare provider might have a lot of interaction with your child we would really like to get your input and opinion for our survey.

6.  Can my spouse/partner/nanny be present during or contribute to the interview? Is this necessary?

Yes, they can be present if they wish. However, the survey questions ask for your perspective and opinions; they will not incorporate the perspective of your spouse/partner or childcare provider.

7.  When will you know the results of the study? Where can I access these results?

Study analyses will be conducted after all interviews are completed in the Fall of 2014.  We hope to complete preliminary analysis in early 2015.  Results will be viewable on this website

8.  Why do you need my Social Security Number?

It is Duke University policy that anyone who receives a gift or monetary incentive from research must provide their social security number for IRS purposes. You will not be taxed for receiving the gift card. However, if you do receive $600 or more in gifts or monetary incentives from Duke University in a calendar year, you might be taxed by the IRS.

9.  Is your staff able to help me fill out additional, unrelated paperwork (i.e. medical or government aid paperwork) at the end of the interview?

Unfortunately, our staff is not able to help participants with any paperwork that is not involved with the project.

10.  I plan on moving soon – am I still eligible to participate?

Yes, if you are eligible to participate in the study and you are still living in Durham County when your child in 4 months old, then we would like to contact you on the telephone or by mail to schedule an interview.
