We are excited to offer a series of optional pre-orientation events designed to help you settle in, explore campus, and begin building connections before Orientation Week officially begins. These events are open to all incoming graduate students.

Group Hike at Al Buehler Trail
Join us for a casual morning 2.9-mile (4.7 km) hike on a wooded trail at the edge of campus. Get some exercise and connect with other incoming students and GSPS staff while enjoying the beautiful Al Buehler Trail.
Friday, August 14 | 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Ice Cream Social & Community Mixer
Harrington Quadrangle (grass area outside Fitzpatrick and Hudson Hall Buildings)
Wrap up your first week with free ice cream and good company. Meet fellow grad students and enjoy a relaxed afternoon of mingling.
Optional: Shared Materials Instrumentation Facility (SMIF) Tours
Interested in learning about Duke’s premier materials characterization and fabrication facilities? Join one of our optional guided SMIF tours to explore the state-of-the-art instrumentation available to graduate researchers.
Tour times:
- 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM (before your Ice Cream Social)
- 2:00 PM – 2:30 PM (after your Ice Cream Social)
Each tour is limited to 10 participants, and advance registration is required through the Ice Cream Social sign-up form.

- For the hike and social mixer, registration is appreciated to help us plan.
