Summer Language Intensive Communication Experience

Welcome Letter

Graduate Communications and Intercultural Programs is excited to offer its Summer Language Intensive Communication Experience (SLICE) from Aug. 11-14, 2025, specifically for newly arriving international students. We hope you can join us for this highly interactive and fun week of communication and community activities.

Our time together will help you acclimate to student life at Duke, learn more about Durham, and get to know your classmates, faculty, and staff at Pratt. SLICE sessions cover a range of classroom, wellbeing, and social topics, and you’ll also have the chance to explore campus resources. Additionally, we plan to take you on a tour of the Duke Lemur Center and spend a morning of community building at the Eno River State Park.

You’ll receive more details about this year’s schedule, session descriptions and cost when registration opens in the spring. As registration is limited, we hope you register as soon as possible. We can’t wait to meet you!

What Our Former SLICE Participants Say

"
To be perfectly honest, every part of the program was engaging and exciting, so it is difficult to choose just one favorite experience. This is the most fun I have had in a very long time, as moving to a different country, let alone a different continent, can be very stressful, and I learned a lot in the process.

"
Apart from that I was able to understand a lot of cultural differences between India and here, and basically understand the norm, or rather the vibe, in USA and Duke University.

"
I chose the SLICE program to get to know more about Duke culture and maybe get a head start, as this is my first time in the States.

I absolutely loved the program. I was able to network and had the opportunity to create relationships as well.
