Product Management and Software Engineering Summer at a Startup

Sergio Macias-Vazquez is a David M. Rubenstein Scholar and a Senior at Duke studying Physics and Computer Science. He has always been interested in how technology can be used to solve the world’s toughest problems. This summer, Macias-Vazquez had the opportunity to work at Next Gen HQ, a community for entrepreneurs to learn about business and get resources, and he helped build their latest website platform. He worked as a Product Management and Engineering Intern and the enrichment funding helped him learn a lot in a startup environment while also having his essential costs covered.

  1. Hey Sergio,

This sounds like a really amazing opportunity. As someone interested in SWE (and the possibility of PM), how would you advise I navigate the decision of narrowing down what path I want to go into?

  2. Do you think that project management is something you’d prefer to do professionally as opposed to having a more specific role in a company or team?

What about project management is similar to general engineering, and what’s different?

Also, how did you manage to land an internship like this?
